Carthage and Nauvoo

We left Quincy, Illinois in the morning and drove to Carthage, Illinois where we first visited the Carthage Jail.  I had been there once before many, many years ago, but this visit was different.  As we sat in the room where the prophet was martyred, I was overcome with emotion and love for him.  All of us felt the Spirit touch our hearts and we knew even stronger than before that Joseph Smith was truly a special prophet of God.

Descending the stairs that the mob rushed up on that fateful day.

Below the window that the Prophet fell from.  I was so emotional at this point, I could hardly even take this picture.

After Carthage, we drove to Nauvoo, Illinois.  When we got there, it started to rain a bit but then quickly turned into a downpour!  Mr. Horne and I stayed in the truck while the girls made a mad dash to find a restroom.  Luckily, the rain didn't last long and we were able to walk around old Nauvoo and enjoy the sites.  We visited the blacksmith shop, the brick shop and the bakery.  The girls went into the school house as well.

My favorite was the Trail of Faith which led down to the river.  It was this trail that the Saints took to leave their beloved Nauvoo behind and begin their journey West.  Some of our ancestors were part of that incredible journey.

On our way out of town, we drove up to the newly rebuilt Nauvoo Temple.  It was spectacular!

After Nauvoo, we drove towards Naperville, Illinois to stay with Mr. Horne's cousin, Steve Horne and his wife, Saundra.  We LOVED staying with them!  They were so gracious and welcoming.  It was a bonus that they had a darling dog (Lucy) that loved us!
